This two-channel video explores the shifting relationship between self-perception and physical embodiment before and after gender-affirming top surgery. On the right, I manipulate my own flesh and fat to envision the possibilities of my chest, imagining what it could be, what I might want it to be, and investigate the malleability of other parts of my body. On the left, my post-surgical chest is wrapped in bandages, and I perform the necessary, intimate daily ritual of stripping fluid from surgical drains. The only audio in the piece accompanies this footage: a composed layering of sounds sampled from labor performed by oil rig machinery. I’m interested in the parallel between my body being drained of protective fluid and the mechanized processes of industrial extraction; how, in some ways, my body, too, becomes a kind of machine.
